The "Apple Maps" Hack: How to Approach Women in Japan (Beginner's Guide)
visiting Japan
Welcome back to my substack!
Last time, we talked about the sacred rules of drinking beer.
Today, we’re diving into a topic highly requested by many of you: Dating.
Specifically, how to approach a cute Japanese woman on the street without instantly scaring her away.

The Fatal Mistake: “Hi, Beautiful!”
Imagine this: You’re walking down the street in Shibuya, and you see a stunning girl. In your home country, you might confidently walk up, flash a smile, and say, “Hi beautiful, let me buy you a drink.”
If you do this in Japan, game over.
Japanese women are generally shy and very cautious of strangers.
If you suddenly close the physical distance and praise her appearance, her inner alarm bells will ring.
She won’t think you’re charming; she’ll think you’re a player, or worse, dangerous.
So, how do you talk to her naturally?
You use your greatest weapon: The “Lost Tourist” approach.
── ❖ ─── ❖ ─── ❖ ─── ❖ ─── ❖
Step 1: The “Apple Maps” Setup
Japanese people take immense pride in Omotenashi (hospitality).
We naturally want to help lost foreigners.
You’re going to use this beautiful cultural trait.
Walk up to her, look politely confused, and ask: “Excuse me, I’m a bit lost. Do you know how to get here?”
Pro Tip: Use Apple Maps. Do NOT use Google Maps.
Google Maps in Japan is way too accurate—nobody will believe you are actually lost. Apple Maps gives you that perfect level of plausible deniability. (Just kidding... mostly. 😉)
Your goal is to pick a destination that is exactly a 3-minute walk away.
Not too far, not too close. This is where your preparation skills shine.
Step 2: The Hollywood Escort
If she’s kind, she might point the way, or better yet, say, “I’ll walk you there.” (Bingo!)
As you walk together through the crowded streets of Tokyo, this is your moment to strike. Use your hand to gently guide her through the sea of people, or step slightly in front to clear a path.
Why is this so effective? Because typical Japanese guys are incredibly shy and rarely do this kind of physical “escorting” in public. When a foreign guy naturally treats her like a princess in a crowded street, her heart rate will spike. Trust me, we love it.
Step 3: The “Orei” (Gratitude) Close
When you finally arrive at your 3-minute destination, don’t just say goodbye.
You now have the ultimate Japanese excuse: Orei (returning the favor).
Say this: “Thank you so much! You saved me. Let me buy you a coffee to say thanks.”
Because you are offering it as a “thank you,” it completely lowers her guard. It’s no longer a pickup attempt; it’s an exchange of politeness.
If she’s too busy right then, smile and say: “No worries! Let me treat you next time.
Do you have Instagram?”
Notice I said Instagram, not LINE or phone number.
Asking for a phone number is way too heavy.
Instagram is casual, visual, and feels safe.

So next time you’re in Japan, put away the cheesy pickup lines, open up Apple Maps, and embrace the art of the lost tourist.
